Samsung, a South Korean electronics manufacturer, has begun producing mobile devices in Pakistan, which is expected to cut the country’s import bill.
According to details, on Tuesday, a team of senators led by Faisal Subzwari, Chairman of the Senate’s Standing Committee on Industries and Production, visited Samsung’s production site in Karachi and formally launched mobile device production.
About the occasion, Samsung‘s senior national management informed the group on the country’s growing mobile manufacturing sector and the issues it faces.
Senator Faisal Subzwari, speaking to the media after the visit, commended Samsung for establishing a modern manufacturing plant and beginning production in less than four months.
He also praised the federal government for creating a favourable atmosphere for one of the world’s major mobile phone manufacturers to come to Pakistan and generate jobs for the local populace.
Senator Faisal Sabzwari further urged that the federal government take strong efforts to change the industry’s focus from growth in the assembly field to localization.
The team also met with the management of the Export Processing Zone Authority (EPZA) to discuss steps done by the EPZA to promote Pakistan’s exports.
It should be noted that Lucky Group and Samsung signed an agreement in July of this year to establish a local assembly factory in Pakistan for the manufacturing of Samsung mobile phones.
A month later, under the Mobile Device Manufacturing (MDM) Regulations 2021, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) approved Lucky Group and Samsung to begin local manufacture of Samsung phones.
